The goal to become a Digital Nomad

Why this blog? A little more freedom please!!

To understand our motivations for starting this blog you might need to understand our unique situation a bit. You can read more about it HERE, but basically we met while traveling through Brazil, spent a year apart, and finally I agreed to leave California and move to Sweden. There is a new TV show that is strikingly similar ….. . Some of the jokes about Swedish and American cultures mixing can be pretty spot-on. Anyway, after moving here, I quickly realized that it is a bit more expensive to live here and travel back and forth to California to see family and friends than I thought.

Originally I thought of having an ecommerce store as just a supplement income that would allow me to afford more flight tickets. What I didn’t realize at the time, was that my goals were a little short sited and what I really desired was to achieve the digital nomad lifestyle.

So, four years ago, I started doing lot of research into different ecommerce opportunities in Stockholm. I’ve never been short on business ideas; pulling the trigger is a whole other issue, it drives Jess a little nutz actually.

While researching an app idea I had, a drop shipping company fell into my lap. Myself and 2 friends convinced ourselves that this was our golden ticket, so we put together our savings and bought the company. Boy!! Were we wrong! Total Nightmare at times! It wasn’t all bad though, it helped me learn about the drop shipping industry, ex which price points are too high, how much customer service interaction per purchase is too much, etc.. . More on those lessons later. I’m thinking about writing another blog post on avoiding the perils of drop shipping. Might title it;

As of writing this post, I am in the final steps of walking away from this time consuming, somewhat expensive, but a huge pain in my you-know-what business. I say, somewhat expensive, because that is one of the benefits of drop shipping, little upfront investment. Anyway, after 2.5 years with this business I began to truly understand the life style I was seeking and thankfully over the course of these years my goals and Jess’ have become intertwined. I probably brain washed her quoting Tim Ferriss, Tony Robbins or Eric Reis so many times. That might make for a nice blog post actually; 5-10 authors that have positively helped shape my life and affected my goals.

We know now that a digital nomad lifestyle is what we desire and if we are going to succeed with anything online, it needs to be with something we are deeply passionate about, hence the travel blog, and a business we can operate from anywhere. We thought we might be able to differentiate ourselves by not just making a travel blog but also showing our successes and failures as we startup different business adventures along the way. We have always been deeply passionate about traveling, since it is how we met, and so far I have been really good at failing in my different business adventures 😉 We think it should make for fun entertainment.

This go-round we are relying on each other and will be documenting our journey as a way of keeping ourselves accountable to ourselves and to the viewers. This post is the first step; a kind of travel blog with a front row seat as we throw off our conventional teachings and take the plunge into being a digital nomad entrepreneur.
